This field trip follows the story of the Dan River through three distinct experiences, connecting innovation, history, and natural beauty in Rockingham County.

Students begin at Basecamp in Mayodan, exploring the Smithsonian Spark innovation exhibit and meeting the Dan Riverkeeper who protects the waterway they'll spend the day exploring.

The journey continues to Mayo River State Park's historic shelter, designed by a notable architect, where students eat lunch, participate in a ranger program, and create texture rubbings of the building's crafted details. They'll receive North Carolina State Parks passports, officially marking their visit.

The day culminates with a hike to DeShazo Falls, where students experience the power and beauty of the river in its most dramatic form.

Activities Include: interactive exhibit exploration, ranger-led program, simple printmaking/art activity, waterfall hike and exploration, state park passport program participation
