Trail Table - POSTPONED!

POSTPONED DUE TO POTENTIAL FOR SEVERE WEATHER - NEW DATE TBA

A family-style low-key community dinner on the trail at Farris Memorial Park on Monday, September 9 from 6-8 pm. 

Please RSVP if you can make it so we can plan for numbers. Details (like where to park & where to find us on the trail) follow

Expect: a warm group gathering with good food and conversation in a peaceful outdoor setting ON the trail at Farris Memorial Park. 

BYOP&F - bring your own plate, fork, and a dish to share with the table. If you'd like to come early, around 5:00 we'll be putting up tables, hanging lights in the trees, and making centerpieces from what we find on the trail. Wheelchair friendly.

Booker T Washington Learning Center on the Trail!

This field trip follows the story of the Dan River through three distinct experiences, connecting innovation, history, and natural beauty in Rockingham County.

Students begin at Basecamp in Mayodan, exploring the Smithsonian Spark innovation exhibit and meeting the Dan Riverkeeper who protects the waterway they'll spend the day exploring.

The journey continues to Mayo River State Park's historic shelter, designed by a notable architect, where students eat lunch, participate in a ranger program, and create texture rubbings of the building's crafted details. They'll receive North Carolina State Parks passports, officially marking their visit.

The day culminates with a hike to DeShazo Falls, where students experience the power and beauty of the river in its most dramatic form.

Activities Include: interactive exhibit exploration, ranger-led program, simple printmaking/art activity, waterfall hike and exploration, state park passport program participation

Art Camp to Basecamp (& trail hike!)

Campers will visit Basecamp to meet with the Dan Riverkeeper, learn about local water quality and river ecosystems, and explore how environmental advocacy connects with creative expression. After the session, the group will travel to Mayo River State Park for a short guided hike focused on observation, place-based reflection, and connection to the natural landscape.

Groundwork: Teen Trail Volunteer Crew - Trail Mapping Project

As part of the Ground Crew team, youth and their accompanying adults will support trail development at Farris Memorial Park through on-the-ground mapping and assessment. Participants will walk trails, document features, note signage and maintenance needs, and assist with light cleanup. This work will inform future improvements to the park’s trail system.

All youth must be accompanied by an adult. Prepare to walk 2 miles.

Location: Farris Memorial Park, Mayodan
Ages: 12+
Time Commitment: 2 - 3 hours
Bring: Water, closed-toe shoes, phone or notebook for notes/photos

Groundwork: teen Trail Volunteer crew

A community service opportunity for youth allows them to contribute to local trail stewardship through observation, discussion, and hands-on work.

Today, students will hike the trail and begin mapping points for directional signage.

This is a lighter-duty service day designed to introduce key trail care concepts and build respect for shared outdoor spaces. All youth must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
